1. Naschmarkt in the Morning — Before the Tourists Arrive

The Naschmarkt is no longer a secret — but between 07:00 and 09:00 in the morning it is still quiet here. Viennese chefs collect their ingredients, regular customers stop at the same cheese stand they have visited for 20 years, and the vendors still have time for a conversation. Everything that comes after is mass tourism. The Saturday flea market from 06:30 is also better early — the bargains are gone before most visitors arrive.

2. Schleifmühlgasse Neighbourhood — The Grätzl of the 4th District

Around Schleifmühlgasse and Margaretenstraße, 1040 Vienna · U4 Kettenbrückengasse or U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz

Between the Naschmarkt and the Gürtel lies one of Vienna’s most lively neighbourhoods. Small galleries, independent shops, local coffee houses and courtyards you would never expect. This is where locals live, shop and spend their free time. The 4th district has no single tourist landmark — and that is precisely what makes it worth seeing.

Our intergenerational café Schleifmühlgasse is part of this neighbourhood — with a garden terrace, open kitchen and dogs very welcome.

3. Volksgarten Instead of Stadtpark

The Stadtpark is beautiful — and full of selfie sticks in front of the Strauss monument. The Volksgarten is quieter, more carefully tended and has one of the finest rose gardens in Vienna in summer. It sits directly next to the Burgtheater and the Hofburg, but most visitors walk straight past it. In summer there is an open-air stage and a café. A place to breathe in the middle of the inner city.

4. The Side Streets of Mariahilfer Straße

6th and 7th districts · U3 Neubaugasse or Zieglergasse

Mariahilfer Straße itself is a shopping street like any other. The streets on either side are Vienna: Neubaugasse with its vintage shops and small galleries, Burggasse with its coffee houses and bookshops, the Spittelberg with its Biedermeier houses. The city slows down noticeably here. Just two cross streets from Mariahilfer Straße the tourists have disappeared entirely.

5. Naschpark — New, Green, Local

Newly opened in November 2025: the Naschpark directly alongside the Naschmarkt. A new green space that gives the neighbourhood a place to linger. Still little known, still uncrowded. In summer 2026 one of the quietest spots in the 6th district — for as long as word has not yet got around.

6. Vollpension Johannesgasse — Hidden Gem Next to the Opera

Johannesgasse 4A, 1010 Vienna · Mon–Sun 08:00–18:00 · U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz (5 min)

Five minutes from the State Opera, a different world entirely. While tourist crowds flow past the Opera outside, inside the Johannesgasse our grandmothers and grandfathers are baking fresh Buchteln, apple strudel and cakes from family recipes. This is not a marketing claim — they really do bake, in an open kitchen, every day.

Our original location near the Naschmarkt is everything a genuine Viennese neighbourhood café should be: open kitchen, turbokitsch décor, garden terrace, dogs very welcome.
