Vienna has two kinds of coffee houses. Some carry their history visibly: listed ceilings, framed portraits of famous regulars, the smell of centuries in the upholstery. Others are writing their history right now.

 

Both are part of Viennese coffee house culture. Both deserve to exist. And both say something about a city that does not see past and present as opposites.

 

We at Vollpension are an intergenerational café, founded in 2012. We do not have centuries behind us. But we have something else: new stories every day. And the conviction that tradition does not have to be old to be genuine.

Coffee Houses with History

Vienna has some of the oldest and most famous coffee houses in the world. Three of them stand for what people mean when they talk about Viennese coffee house culture.

Café Central — since 1876

Herrengasse 14, 1010 Vienna (currently: DECENTRAL pop-up at Palais Harrach, Freyung, 1010 Vienna)

Café Central at Palais Ferstel is perhaps the most famous coffee house in Vienna. Sigmund Freud, Arthur Schnitzler and Peter Altenberg sat here. Leon Trotsky played chess here before he made history. The high vaulted arches, the marble columns, the figure of poet Peter Altenberg at the entrance that has greeted visitors for decades: everything here speaks of another era.

Since March 2026, Café Central has been closed for major renovation. A pop-up called DECENTRAL at Palais Harrach on the Freyung keeps the tradition going in the meantime. What this shows: even a coffee house with 150 years of history sometimes needs to reinvent itself.

Café Landtmann — since 1873

Universitätsring 4, 1010 Vienna

The Landtmann is considered the most distinguished coffee house in Vienna. Right on the Ring, next to the Burgtheater, with a view of the Rathaus. Freud was a regular; today politicians and cultural figures come here. The history of the house is the history of the Second Republic: no important conversation in Vienna that has not been held at least once at the Landtmann.

Hotel Sacher — since 1876

Philharmoniker Straße 4, 1010 Vienna

The Sacher is not a classic coffee house but a grand hotel with a café. But the Sachertorte, the deep red velvet, the atmosphere: that is Vienna as the world knows it. There are no surprises here. There is what you expect, perfectly executed, for generations. That has its own value.

Alongside the great classics there are coffee houses that do not have centuries behind them, but write new stories every day. The most vivid ones happen between people.

We do not have a listed vault. No Sigmund Freud table. No imperial past.

 

What we have: Frau Marianne, who has been with us since 2016 and explains while rolling out strudel dough why her mother always used a particular variety of apple. Herr Johannes, who has been running baking courses since 2018 and takes home a new story after every one. Guests who come for the first time and return a second time asking for our baking grandmother by name.

 

That is the intergenerational café as a modern reinterpretation of the Viennese coffee house: not a museum, but a living place. Not an archive, but a stage. Every day.

History is what has happened. Stories are happening right now. Vollpension is both: rooted in Viennese coffee house culture and yet fully alive.

Tradition Does Not Have to Be Old

 

What makes a coffee house a genuine Viennese coffee house? Not the year above the entrance. But what happens inside.

 

UNESCO inscribed Viennese coffee house culture on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. Not because the buildings are old, but because they embody a particular way of living: sitting slowly, having time, reading the newspaper, drinking a Melange, talking or being quiet. A house with 150 years of history can do that. And so can a house founded in 2012.

 

The difference is not the age. The difference is the attitude.

 

At Vollpension, something else comes with it: the conviction that encounters between generations do not have to happen by chance, but can be consciously created.
