Breakfast in Vienna – The Best Spots 2026 | Vollpension

From freshly baked Buchteln to breakfast boxes on a rooftop terrace: Vienna has the right spot for every morning.

Anyone having breakfast in Vienna is not simply eating. They are taking their time. Sitting down. Reading. Letting the Melange go cold and ordering another one anyway. The Viennese breakfast is not a meal, it is an attitude — and the coffee houses of this city have been perfecting it for centuries.

At Vollpension, we believe the best breakfast smells of freshly baked Buchteln, comes from someone who truly knows how to bake, and arrives at the table with a story behind it. For us, that story belongs to our grandmothers and grandfathers. But Vienna has more to offer.

This is our honest overview of the best breakfast spots in the city — from the grand classics to the hidden gems.

Breakfast in the Classic Viennese Coffee House

The classic Viennese breakfast: a bread roll, butter, jam, a Melange. Newspapers on a rack. No rush whatsoever. This exists nowhere else quite like Vienna — and nowhere better than in these three coffee houses.

Café Sperl

Gumpendorfer Straße 11, 1060 Vienna · Mon–Sat 07:00–22:00 · Sun 10:00–20:00 · Closed Sundays in July and August

Early risers get some of the best seats in Vienna. The Sperl opens Monday to Saturday at 07:00 and is one of the earliest coffee houses in the city. Barely changed since 1880: billiard tables, 34 varieties of coffee, the famous Sperl Torte with chocolate cream and almonds. In the 6th district, slightly outside the main tourist area and therefore quieter and more authentic than the coffee houses of the 1st district.

For whom: anyone who wants the most classic breakfast in Vienna without being rushed. No reservation needed, but arriving early is worth it.

Café Landtmann

Universitätsring 4, 1010 Vienna · Mon–Sat 07:30–00:00 · Sun 07:30–22:00

Vienna’s most famous coffee house opens daily at 07:30. Sigmund Freud was a regular; today it attracts politicians, cultural figures and journalists. The breakfast offer is refined: fresh pastries, cheese and cold-cut platters, egg dishes. Located directly next to the Burgtheater and the Rathaus. Prices to match, but justified for a special morning in Vienna.

For whom: anyone who wants the grandest coffee house breakfast in Vienna. Not for every day, but for special occasions.

Café Hawelka

Dorotheergasse 6, 1010 Vienna · Mon–Thu 08:00–00:00 · Fri–Sat 08:00–01:00 · Sun 10:00–00:00

Hawelka is not a cosy breakfast spot in the traditional sense. It is narrow, loud and full of history. Barely changed since 1939. The Buchteln made to the original recipe are still there. Breakfast here means eating in the middle of over 80 years of Viennese coffee house history. That makes it unforgettable.

For whom: anyone looking for the experience, not the quiet. Open on Sundays from 10:00 only.

Modern Breakfast in Vienna

Alongside the classics, Vienna has a lively scene of modern breakfast spots. Seasonal menus, great coffee specialties, well-considered atmospheres. Sometimes with a garden terrace, sometimes with a city view.

Propeller

Krongasse 22, 1050 Vienna · Mon–Sat 09:00–00:00 · Sun 09:00–16:00 · Reservation recommended on weekends

The open secret of the 5th district that is no longer a secret: queues form on weekends. Propeller is a corner café with oversized windows, wooden floors and a minimalist bar. The breakfast menu changes seasonally: poached eggs on sourdough, modern Austrian cuisine, vegan options. Coffee from small roasteries. Not cheap, but worth every cent.

For whom: anyone who wants modern breakfast in a relaxed neighbourhood atmosphere. Book ahead for weekends.

Freiraum

Mariahilfer Straße 117, 1060 Vienna · Mon–Thu 08:00–00:00 · Fri 08:00–02:00 · Sun 08:00–22:00 · Breakfast all day · Breakfast boxes from 5.80 €

A fixture on Vienna’s breakfast scene since 2008. Freiraum on Mariahilfer Straße opens at 08:00 and serves breakfast all day long. The concept: customisable breakfast boxes with a base box from 5.80 € and optional add-ons. Own roastery Röstraum, many vegetarian and vegan options, large garden terrace, fully accessible.

For whom: anyone who wants flexible breakfast with no time limit. Late risers very welcome.

Burggasse 24

Burggasse 24, 1070 Vienna · daily 10:00–22:00 · Breakfast until 14:00

A café attached to a vintage shop in the 7th district. Eclectic mixed furnishings, open fireplace, shabby chic at its purest. Breakfast is served daily until 14:00, which is particularly good news for late risers. Dogs welcome, garden terrace in summer. Quieter and more intimate than Propeller or Freiraum.

For whom: anyone who wakes up late and still wants breakfast. One of the cosiest spots in the 7th district.

OBEN

Urban-Loritz-Platz 2A, 1070 Vienna (roof of the Hauptbücherei) · Mon–Wed 10:00–22:00 · Thu–Sat 10:00–23:00 · Sun 10:00–15:00 (brunch) · Breakfast Mon–Fri until 11:30 · Sat until 15:00

Breakfast above the rooftops of Vienna: OBEN sits on the rooftop of the Hauptbücherei at Urban-Loritz-Platz and has one of the most beautiful terraces in the city. The most beautiful breakfasts in Vienna often happen not in the most famous venues, but in the small, characterful cafés tucked into residential streets. These two have earned their place on the list.

Ulrich

Café Tagsüber

Kupkagasse 2, 1080 Vienna · Tue–Sun 09:00–18:00 · Mon closed · Breakfast until 15:30
