We receive no ongoing wage subsidies and finance all costs and salaries 100% from our revenues. This means we must – like any hospitality business – manage finances, pay bills, cover rent, and pay wages. The difference: we do this with an additional mission – creating social impact.
This has concrete consequences:
❤ A piece of grandma’s cake is made with careful handcraft. Our seniors bake using household tools and traditional methods, while large patisseries and chains rely on assembly lines and standardized processes. But our guests do not pay multiple times the price – so our café must be full for us to operate sustainably.
❤ We employ significantly more people than a typical business, many in part-time roles – and around 50% are seniors, often with special needs.
❤ We create roles like the “Grandma on Duty,” which are not focused on efficiency but on human connection and impact.
❤ At the same time, we are economically evaluated like any other company – without our social contribution being reflected in the balance sheet or providing any tax benefits.
Why do we do it anyway?
Because older people have so much to give when the right conditions are created. That’s exactly what we have developed – a financially sustainable system where seniors have fully meaningful roles.
The numbers show that it works:
❤ Over 100 seniors have baked, served, and shone with us in the past ten years – collectively earning more than 2 million euros. Many of them have become long-term stars in our team.
❤ Over 1 million guests have tasted their cakes – putting us in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide on TripAdvisor.
